What happens next

After you send a request, a provider may reach out to ask a few simple things. What happened? Where is the water? How long has it been there? Have you shut off the water source? Have photos ready if you can. They help a provider understand the job.

While you wait, stay safe. Keep away from standing water near outlets and appliances. Move small items to a dry spot. Take photos before you move things, so the damage is on record.

A provider may then offer to visit and give you a written estimate. Many providers can respond quickly, but availability varies. Request a callback to check provider availability.

What to ask a provider

Here are good questions to bring to the conversation:

• Are you licensed and insured where required?
• What is your plan for drying, and how will you measure that it worked?
• Will you help document the damage for a claim?
• Can I have the quote in writing before work starts?
• What could change the price?
